Social Security Disability Reconsideration: Build an Appeal File
Read the notice before gathering
Identify the decision date, appeal level, filing methods and reasons. SSA generally presumes receipt five days after the notice date unless shown otherwise, but use the instructions in your notice.
If the deadline is close, file the reconsideration request promptly and indicate that additional evidence will follow as allowed. Do not let the search for a perfect record consume the appeal window.
Deadline first, then record gaps
- SSA states that reconsideration is generally requested within 60 days.
- A timely appeal request and the supporting evidence can be handled as coordinated tasks.
- More records are not automatically better; explain what changed or was missed.
Map the decision gaps
List each medical condition considered, records received, time period reviewed, past work finding and functional conclusion. Mark missing providers, wrong dates, incomplete treatment periods or misunderstood job duties.
A diagnosis alone does not explain work-related function. Describe supported limits in sitting, standing, lifting, concentration, attendance or adapting, as relevant to the record.
Turn each decision gap into a question for the record. Which conditions were evaluated, which providers and dates were present, what past work was described, and which functional abilities were assumed? Note missing treatment periods, wrong job demands, or unsupported dates separately. This prevents a large medical upload from hiding the exact part of the initial decision that needs a new or corrected fact.
Separate the notice, deadline, issue list, and medical records with the benefits appeal-file method.
Build a gap-focused reconsideration file
Protect the appeal date first. Then show what the first decision missed, misstated, or did not yet include.
Appeal request
SSA notices generally give a limited time to request review.
Focused update: Use the notice and file promptly.
Decision gaps
More records help only when they answer a finding.
Focused update: List each reason and the evidence that responds to it.
Updated function and treatment
Recent changes may affect the medical and work record.
Focused update: Report new providers, limits, tests, and work facts clearly.
Update medical and work evidence
Provide current provider details, new tests, treatment changes, medication effects and records not already in the file. Ask providers for factual functional observations rather than a conclusory statement alone.
Correct work history accurately, including physical and mental demands, dates and accommodations. Never minimize work or exaggerate restrictions; inconsistencies can weaken the file.
Describe function with supported examples across an ordinary week. Connect symptoms and treatment effects to sitting, standing, lifting, using hands, concentrating, following instructions, attending reliably, or adapting when those issues are relevant. Include frequency, duration, assistance, recovery time, and the record that supports the statement. Consistent detail is more useful than an unsupported conclusion that a person cannot work.
Explain each contested finding through a reason-to-evidence map rather than an unstructured document bundle.

Track submission and assistance
Keep confirmation numbers, uploaded-file lists and copies. Check appeal status and respond to requests from Disability Determination Services.
Accredited representatives and legal-aid organizations may help. Fee and representation rules apply, so verify credentials through official sources and do not assume any representative can guarantee an award.
Maintain a submission ledger with the reconsideration confirmation, provider records requested, records received, uploads, calls, and outstanding items. Check whether each file appears in the case process rather than assuming a provider sent it. Keep identifying details secure and use the official status and contact routes named by SSA.
Reconsideration control sheet
- Calendar the notice-based deadline
- Submit the reconsideration request on time
- List missing or misunderstood evidence
- Update medical and work information
- Keep upload and submission confirmations
Questions about disability reconsideration
How long do I have to request reconsideration?
SSA says to submit within 60 days after receiving the decision. Read the notice and act promptly.
Must every record be ready before I appeal?
SSA's electronic terms recognize that additional evidence may follow. Preserve the appeal deadline and state what remains to be submitted.
Is reconsideration a hearing?
It is generally a new review of the initial decision. A hearing before an administrative law judge is a later appeal level if reconsideration is unfavorable.
